Oak Class

This term in Oak class we are exploring 'Astounding Australia!'.  We started our term boarding the HMS Friendship as convicts and setting sail for Port Jackson. The children enjoyed rations of moldy, maggot ridden bread, mice and water before travelling up to their classrooms. Later, we investigated the Australian, Aboriginal, and Torres Strait Islander flags and their meanings and created some outstanding work linked to this.

This term we have used coordinates to map out and locate Australian landmarks and cities, explored traditional Aboriginal dreamtime stories, investigated Australian climate and landscape, created amazing bush fire artwork which is on display in the classroom and used our computing lessons to create powerpoint presentations about unusual Australian animals. We can't wait to see what we will find out next!

Please remember that children need their PE kits in school first thing Monday mornings and that they are to stay in school all week. Many children are forgetting these at home and it is not a great start to the working week. Let’s set our children up for success by giving them a gentle reminder of the things they will need for a positive week at school. Gugafit is on a Thursday morning and children will be participating in Rugby at the start of the spring 2 term before taking part in a inter-class rugby competition at the end of this half term.

A list of take home tasks has been sent out and are now due in, this includes spelling words on the back. Please ensure that children are practising spelling and times tables often to support their in school focus. Children must also read for at least 5 minutes every night this is beneficial for a number of reasons. Regular reading develops their word knowledge as well as improving spelling and writing.  HOMEWORK! Homework is given out on Wednesday and MUST be back in school on a Monday please. A weekly spelling list is also sent home on Mondays and MUST be completed and brought back into school on Friday morning, spelling is part of our compulsory homework. Our Library slot is on a Wednesday afternoon, so please ensure that library books are in school ready to exchange. Reading books must be in school each day with reading records to ensure children have their appropriate reading material for their one to one reading slots. If there are any parents who would like to volunteer for reading support we would appreciate this very much!

If there are any concerns regarding homework or any other matters please do not hesitate to speak to me regarding this before or after school, I am very flexible and approachable. If you would like a longer consultation I am happy to make an appointment at your convenience.

Please ensure that children are in class ready to learn each day by 8.45 am with the following please;

  • P.E. kit,
  • Water bottle,
  • Reading Record, and
  • Reading book.
