Chestnut Class

Welcome to Chestnut class and Year 5!

In the Autumn Term Chestnut Class will be learning about World War One as part of the centenary commemorations. We will explore why war broke out, learn about some of the most influential figures and discover what life was like in the trenches along the Western Front. We will also learn about the effects of the sinking of the Lusitania. We will be going on a trip to the Surrey History Centre in Woking. This will reveal the impact of World War One on our local area. This topic links well with Art, Food Technology, Design Technology and English.

Reading for Passion is important, in upper school our themed book corner is stocked with a wide of range of books. Time each day is devoted to sharing a class text together and to reading just because. We will be tweeting the authors of the books we read to share our thoughts. Hopefully we will get some tweets in return! It is the expectation that every child reads every day at home to practise the skills they are learning in class.

Each week there will be two PE sessions, on Monday afternoon and Thursday morning. Full PE kit is required (plain white t-shirt, plain black shorts, trainers and plain grey/black tracksuit for colder weather). It is a very good idea to have a named PE kit in school every day as we might sneak in extra sessions of Skip2bfit, dance or Go Noodle fitness into our day.

Home Learning remains an important aspect of school learning. It is an opportunity to practise or develop skills from Maths and English lessons. Each task should take 20 minutes or so. Home Learning will be handed out on Wednesday and is to be returned by Monday morning. Home learning will be recorded on a checklist and opportunity given at Monday break to complete tasks if needed.

Topic Takeaway tasks will be issued once the topic is underway. These tasks are fantastic opportunities to work together as a family in a creative way over several weeks. We look forward to seeing these creations.
