6E Miss Egan

Welcome to 6E!

The Autumn term is all about Ancient Maya culture and civilisation. From the stunning start of Maya weaving and mask making to the reinactment of Pokatok- an ancient civilisation spin on football. It is a fascinating topic learning about lifestyles, social
structure and how the Maya worshipped.

Bikeability level 2 happens during this term too!

The return in the New Year coincides with the launch of a new topic, The Unsinkable Ship: Titanic. We will be learning about the time line of events, who was on aboard and why they were travelling to New York and beyond.

In art, we will be learning how to manipulate lines to create different effects, inspired by Kadinsky. Our English lessons (through Talk for Writing) will be linked to recounts in different formats.

The week before February half term traditionally is the week for the Year Six residential trip to High Ashurst. High Adventure, Zip Wire, Forest Adventure, Bushcraft and Den Building. It is always a privilege to accompany Year 6 on this trip and witness the exhilaration of overcoming a fear or accomplishing a new challenge.

As we move through the Spring term, we approach the Year Six end of keystage assessments. Our preparations will be well underway to ensure the children are feeling confident that we are teaching them well and they have lots of opportunity to learn skills and knowledge. During this period, we will be undertaking SATs rotation which is a fantastic opportunity for the children
to practise the skills needed for ‘SATs’.

The importance of daily reading can not be stressed enough - reading for 20 minutes a day really does help to improve fluency and accuracy, reading speed and spelling too; plus the added bonus of different sentence structures and use of grammatical features.

Homework will allow children to consolidate their school learning within a new environment. It will be handed out on Wednesdays and is expected to be returned on the following Tuesday.

Each week there will be two PE sessions, on Tuesday afternoon and Thursday afternoon. Full PE kit is required (plain white t-shirt, plain black shorts, trainers and plain grey/black tracksuit for colder weather). It is a very good idea to have a named PE kit in school everyday as we might sneak in extra sessions of Skip2bfit, dance or GoNoodle fitness into our day.
