6N Mrs Noor

Welcome to 6N’s class page!

6N have had such a fantastic start to the year and I couldn't be any prouder of them.  They have settled in extremely well and have adjusted to the increasing workload that the Year 6 curriculum involves.  They have all made fantastic progress and have demonstrated great resilience and determination to achieve the best they can.  I am thoroughly delighted to see how far they have already come, and I am excited to see the progress they will make in the Spring term!

In maths, we are developing our understanding into many new areas of the maths curriculum; this includes percentages, algebra and ratio.  The children have shown fantastic progress this term and I am very confident they are ready for the new challenges.  We are continuing to practise both arithmetic and reasoning skills in lessons and in early morning work every week - the children continue to show an increased confidence and accuracy when doing so.

During our English lessons we are immersing ourselves with different writing tasks.  We will be learning about warning stories, flashback narratives and character descriptions.  I am very excited to see the wonderful work the children develop as they have created such imaginative and detailed pieces this term.  We will continue to develop our grammar knowledge by exploring punctuation, different sentence styles and writing structure.  We also have a strong focus on reading this term and will be developing reading opportunities throughout our foundation subjects.

In Science this term, we are learning about ‘Evolution and Inheritance’.  We are exploring how living things have adapted and evolved over a long period of time, as well as exploring Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution.  We continue to use the Phiz Lab for practical lessons though only one class will be allowed to visit the Phiz Lab on any given day, which will allow for a deep clean to happen after school.

Our focus in History for this term is World War I and II.  The children are learning about the reasons that caused both World Wars to begin, what life was like for people during the wars and key events that took place during the wars, such as The Battle of the Somme and VE Day.  During the stunning start, children explored the significance behind, and created their own poppies and medals which are now proudly displayed in our classroom.  We are all very excited to learn more about this fascinating and momentous time in our history!

Please remember that all children now have to come to school wearing their PE kit on the day that they have PE/Games.  They are to remain in their PE kit all day.  In Year 6, PE/Games take place all afternoon on a Tuesday.

Each child has been given a maths and a grammar CGP book for their homework this year.  Each week, I assign new pages for the children to complete to support their learning in class.  They have also been given a copy of their weekly spellings for the term, a copy of which can be found on Seesaw if required.  Homework is assigned each Tuesday and is due the following Tuesday.  If you have any further questions about homework, please ask!

As always, we strongly encourage you to read with your child on a daily basis.  In class, we are thoroughly enjoying exploring a range of new books both independently and as a class.  Our class reader so far is The Lighthouse Keeper, which we are thoroughly enjoying!

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to arrange an appointment to talk to me on the phone (until restrictions are lifted).
