Phiz Lab Science

Science at the forefront at Cordwalles!

At Cordwalles Junior School we highly regard Science as a crucial subject to expand curious minds. Our Phiz Lab enables us to deliver exciting and exhilarating lessons in an environment ideal for learning! We are currently in the process of creating a new robust Science Curriculum which will take our learning to the next level in order to achieve extraordinary results in an extraordinary facility.

Cordwalles Junior School takes on Science full force!

This year, Cordwalles Junior School is taking on the huge but very exciting task of achieving the Primary Science Quality Mark.

The Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM) is a highly successful, unique award programme to develop and celebrate the profile of science teaching, learning and leadership in primary schools. Science subject leaders join a local PSQM hub and are supported by professional development to achieve the PSQM award, PSQM Gilt award or PSQM Outreach award for their schools.

What are the PSQM awards?

There are three different PSQM awards to ensure that all schools can achieve Primary Science Quality Mark. The awards are intended to be school appropriate, and provide a framework for improvement and development in leadership and provision, whatever the starting point.

Why are we doing it?

Science plays a huge part in our creative curriculum and with the extraordinary resource known as the Phiz Lab, we encourage young minds to explore the possibilities within science at every level. Our teachers are enthusiastic about the subject and as recognition for their hard work and effort. It is to celebrate our strengths but also to recognise things that we can improve upon.

Here’s to building the profile of science at Cordwalles!

‘Phiz Labs’ and Ogden Trust Partnerships

In 2016, with funding and support from The Ogden Trust (http://www.ogdentrust.com/), three GLF Primary Schools (Hillcroft, Cordwalles and Danetree) have set up their own dedicated science laboratories. These ‘Phiz Labs’ provide a special and exciting space for the teaching and learning of Science. They are not only an excellent resource for the host schools but for all schools within the Multi Academy Trust, who are able to access and use their facilities. There are currently fewer than 20 Phiz Lab’s in the whole country and we are delighted to be one of the beneficiaries of this fantastic initiative! In addition to the above, GLF are continuing to work with The Ogden Trust on a number of other initiatives. The Trust will be providing ongoing funding for the next 2 years to support teacher training and a range of inspirational outreach activities and events.

Primary Science Teaching Trust Partnership

GLF has been selected by the Primary Science Teaching Trust (https://pstt.org.uk/ ) to be a beneficiary of an exciting new initiative. Over the next five years, the PSTT will provide funding to GLF primary schools to enable them to work together to develop their Science teaching and learning and to share best practise. Teachers at GLF Primary schools will receive training in the latest science teaching techniques and will have preferential access to a range of PSTT resources. An additional grant of £5,000 from the PSTT will enable our network of schools to create resource hubs of the latest, cutting edge scientific equipment which all schools will be able to use.
